Olivia

When Olivia rolled awake the next morning, she was disappointed to find Jessica wasn’t next to her.

She didn’t take it to mean anything other than Jessica must’ve gotten up to go to work, but still, Olivia would’ve loved to have stayed in bed and snuggled with her.

But Olivia had her own matters to attend to, namely a meeting with Marlene to return Houndini. He at least was in bed with her, snuggled up by her feet and out cold.

Olivia had no idea what time it was, nor how long she’d been asleep, so she hoped she hadn’t missed the meeting.

She darted up out of bed and reached for her phone on the bedside table, which she’d failed to plug in the night before. Thankfully, it still had most of its charge, and the clock on the phone’s face showed it was just after 9 AM.

Olivia tapped out a quick text message to Jessica, telling her she was thankful for their wonderful night together and that she wished Jess could be there with her for the meeting with Marlene.

She sat staring at the screen for a few moments, eagerly waiting for a response, but it never came. Olivia assumed Jessica was busy, overwhelmed with work as usual, and set her phone down on the bedside table, determined not to read into it.

Houndini whined at her, as if he knew what was coming, and Olivia went to the bed to scratch his head.

She realized it might be the last time she’d ever get to wake up with him, unless Marlene was gracious enough to let Houndini come and stay with her every now and then.

“It’s okay, buddy. This isn’t the end of the road, I promise,” Olivia said as she continued petting Houndini’s head. He groaned and went back to sleep with a huff, and Olivia left him to quickly take a shower. Houndini had no idea what was coming, but it didn’t matter. She assumed he’d be just as happy as Marlene was to be back with his owner, even though it meant saying goodbye to Olivia and Jessica.

After she showered, Olivia pulled the leash Jessica had loaned her off the hook in her bathroom and attached it to Houndini’s collar. He watched her, confused, until she lured him off the bed with the promise of treats.

In the kitchen, Olivia fed him what was left of the dog food she’d bought days prior and they were out the door by 9:45.

The entire drive to The Spotted Dog was difficult. Houndini sat in the passenger seat, excitedly hanging out the window, his tongue leaving streaks of slobber all down the side of her car, but all Olivia could do was smile at him.

It was amazing how a creature like Houndini could always be so happy, and Olivia felt like there was something profound she could learn from that.

They arrived at the restaurant just a few minutes before 10, and outside on the patio sat an elderly woman who Olivia could only assume was Marlene.
